Marie's happy childhood ends abruptly when she and her sisters are abandoned by their father in an orphanage. Three small girls left alone without any explanation of why their lives have suddenly changed. Happily life improves when Father returns and Marie and her younger sister Lorna eventually join their parents in India.
Marie loves her life in India and we are treated to wonderful descriptions of the places she visits and the people she meets. Marie's determination shines through in this honest account of her life as she allows us to share the painful events as well as the triumphs.
Looking back over the years Marie can feel pleased with her achievements - she has only one real regret. Despite her best attempts she has been unable to be reunited with her sister Joan, or find out what became of her after they parted company all those years ago on the eve of Marie's journey to India. It is this unresolved area of her life that has provided Marie with the motivation to finally write and publish her story in a book called "Sadness and Sunshine".
